One of the biggest challenges I have faced in my 30 years in the public relations and media industry is getting clients to think outside the box when it comes to marketing their business. Traditional advertising techniques are high cost, slow acting and simply do not function for organizations with limited budgets. Advertisers, especially smaller businesses, can go bankrupt waiting to see the return on their investment in a radio campaign or a newspaper insert. Every day across the country the news media produces thousands of reports about businesses or interviews business owners as a source for their news stories. Each time a company name is mentioned in the press that translates to free publicity for that company; and, because it is mentioned as part of a news piece it carries more credibility than a traditional ad ever could. However, these mentions don’t happen by accident. They are carefully orchestrated by publicists who promote their clients to journalists and editors. This is public relations at it's best and traditionally it is incredibly expensive. But the SMART network brings the power of publicity to the small business owner at a price that is affordable on any budget.

Another mistake I see many clients make is focusing solely on customer acquisition, not taking the time to grow their business network. Business owners often forget that the phrase; “it’s not what you know…it’s who you know” is just as true in business as it is in life. Building a strong network of contacts is crucial to the growth of your business. Unfortunately, doing this often takes a great deal of time, something that entrepreneurs like yourself don’t have in excess.
